State Mandate

Louisiana Temporary Instructional Permit (TIP)

Louisiana OMV Portal ↗

Under Louisiana Revised Statutes, every student enrolling in a driver education or pre-licensing course must visit a Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles field office to obtain a Temporary Instructional Permit (TIP) before instruction starts.

What to Bring to the OMV:

  • Certified Birth Certificate: Original state-issued birth certificate (no photocopies).
  • Social Security Card: Original Social Security card.
  • Two Proofs of Residency: Utility bills, mortgage, or official mail matching parent/guardian address.
  • School Attendance Verification: For minors, official school enrollment document or report card.
  • Parent/Guardian with Valid License: Legal parent or guardian must accompany minor applicants.
Knowledge Test Prep

Louisiana Road Signs, Signals & Markings

Recognizing traffic sign shapes and colors instantly is fundamental to hazard prevention and essential to passing the Louisiana OMV 40-question written test.

🛑

Octagon: Red

Stop completely behind the crosswalk or stop bar. Proceed only when clear.

⚠️

Diamond: Yellow

Warning of impending road conditions, curves, school crossings, and merges.

Regulatory mandates such as speed limits, one-way streets, and lane control.

Safety Strategy

The 3–4 Second Space Cushion Rule

Maintaining adequate space around your vehicle gives you time to react if another driver swerves or stops unexpectedly.

How to Measure Following Distance:

  1. Pick a stationary marker on the side of the roadway (a sign, overpass, or tree).
  2. When the vehicle in front passes the marker, begin counting: "One thousand and one, one thousand and two, one thousand and three..."
  3. If the front bumper of your vehicle reaches the marker before you finish counting to three, you are tailgating and must ease back.
  4. Increase to 5–6 seconds during Louisiana heavy rains, fog, or nighttime driving on rural roads.
Lesson Day Checklist

Preparing for Your Driving Lesson

Required Items:

  • Original Louisiana TIP Permit (Physical paper permit).
  • Valid government-issued photo ID or school ID.
  • Prescription eyeglasses or contacts if your permit indicates a corrective lens restriction.

Attire & Preparation:

  • Closed-toe, flat-soled footwear (sneakers or driving shoes).
  • No flip-flops, slides, bare feet, or high heels permitted for pedal safety.
  • Well-rested and alert; phones silenced in training vehicle.
Parent Resources

Parent & Teen Supervised Driving Guide

Louisiana requires teen drivers to accumulate a minimum of 50 hours of supervised driving (including 15 hours at night) with a licensed parent or guardian in addition to formal commercial driver education.

We recommend structuring family practice into gradual phases: starting in empty parking lots for smooth braking and turning, advancing to quiet residential streets, and progressing to Louisiana state highways and adverse weather situations once fundamental vehicle control is mastered.
